Welcome to our Verdant VX4 thermostat wireless installation tutorial. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the full process of installing your new wireless thermostat and setting it up correctly.

If you’re looking for the VX4 wired thermostat installation instructions, you can find the full guide here.

What Comes in the Box

Before we begin, let’s review the components included with your shipment:

  • VX4 Thermostat – The central component of your Verdant energy management system.
  • Controller Card
  • Online Connection Kit – Enables networking capabilities.
  • Optional Accessories (depending on your setup):
    • Occupancy Sensor
    • Wall Plate
    • Door and Window Sensor
    • VRF Adapter (various types available)
  • High Voltage Control Card (ZXHV) – Manages high voltage HVAC connections.

Step 1: Install the Online Connection Kit

Before installing the thermostat, we recommend starting with the Online Connection Kit.

Confirm You Have the Following:

  • RJ45 Cable
  • Verdant Gateway
  • USB Cable
  • Power Supply
  • Antenna

Setup Steps:

  1. Screw the antenna onto the wireless receiver.
  2. Connect the wireless receiver to the Verdant gateway using the supplied USB cable.
  3. Affix the wireless receiver to the wall with double-sided adhesive tape. Ensure the antenna is pointing upwards.
  4. Connect the gateway to the LAN port with the RJ45 cable.
  5. Plug the gateway into an electrical outlet using the power cord.

The gateway is essential for network properties, allowing thermostats to connect to the internet and communicate with Verdant’s cloud service.

Important Notes:

  • Install the antenna module within 100 ft of the first thermostats.
  • Avoid placing it near large metal structures or surfaces.
  • Plug the gateway into a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) to prevent power-related issues.

Network Configuration:

If the kit doesn’t come online:

  • Ensure it’s receiving an IP from a DHCP server.
  • If behind a login splash page, whitelist the MAC address (found on the bottom sticker).
  • If behind a firewall, ensure the following ports are open: 443, 10191–10291, and 22.
  • No inbound ports are required unless specific options are requested.

Step 2: Install the HVAC Controller and Thermostat

Verdant HVAC controllers support wireless thermostat control for most HVAC units and include:

  • J6 (0–10 VDC)
  • J4 (RS485)
  • J3 (24 VAC Relay Outputs)

Refer to your HVAC unit’s manual for wiring instructions.

Steps for 24 VAC Relay Units:

  1. Power off the HVAC unit.
  2. Mount the controller inside the HVAC unit.
  3. Use the wire harness to connect the controller to the unit.
  4. If applicable, set to external thermostat class 2 mode (refer to HVAC unit documentation).

Additional Notes:

  • J6 port – 3 universal outputs and ground (0–10 VDC applications).
  • J11 port – Supplies 12 VDC power to thermostat. Connect using the wire harness to the back of the wireless thermostat (J11 to 12VDC G&D).
  • J9 port – Dry contact for external devices like lighting relays or dampers.
  • J10 jumper – Used to create a wet contact supplying power from RNC.

J3 Wiring Details (default roles):

  • C (black) – Common wire
  • R – 24 VAC power
  • W – Heat
  • Yellow – Cooling
  • OB (orange) – Reversing valve for heat pumps
  • AUX 2 (brown) – Relay for other apps
  • GL (purple) – Fan (low)
  • GH (green) – Fan (high)
  • OX 1 (blue) – Occupancy output (lighting, ventilation, etc.)

Installation Tips:

  • Ensure the controller antenna faces the thermostat and avoid any contact with metal.
  • Do not mount over the HVAC unit’s condensation pan. Use plastic ties or double-sided tape to secure it.

Step 3: Install the Verdant VX4 Wireless Thermostat

Placement Tips:

  • Face the occupancy sensor toward the bed or high-use area.
  • Avoid locations near:
    • Metal structures (e.g. ducts)
    • Windows and exterior walls
    • Supply vents, door vents

Installation Steps:

  1. If using a wall plate, place it over the old thermostat hole and mark for drilling.
  2. Mark the mounting holes on the wall.
  3. Drill two 3/16″ holes and insert wall anchors.
